SPARTA

SPARTA
Peloponnesi civitas nobilissima, Laconiae aput, ad Eurotam fluv. Lycurgi legibus optime olim instituta. Eustath. in Odyss. a. sic dictam scribit, ἀπὸ τȏυ μυθευομένων κατα τȏυ Κάδμου ςπαρτῶν ἀνδρῶν, οἱ κατα την` παλαιὰν ἱςτορίαν ενεῖ ενπεσόντες Σπάρτην ἀφ᾿ ἐαυτοῦ την` πόλιν ὠνόμαϚαν. Historiam hanc ex tImagora citat Stephanus Byzantinus, in Σπάρτη. Sed ipsi Ethnici agnoscunt, quicquid narratur περὶ τȏυ κατα Κάδμου ςπαρτῶν, commentum esse putidissimum. Multo verius igitur, quod alii volunt, Spartan vel Sparta dictam Euortae filia, et uxore Lacedaemonis, vel a Sparto Phoronei filio, vel διὰ τὸ τὸς πρώτους τῆς συνοικίϚαντας πόλιν Λέλεγας διεςπαρμένους εἰς ταυτὸν συνελθεῖν, καὶ μίαν ὄικησιν ποιήσαςθαι. Apud hos summus honor senibus habebatur, teste Plut. in Laconicis: Unde proverb. In sola Sparta expedit senescere. Σπάρτην ἔλαχες, ταύτην κόσμει; signifiat, Sorte tuâ contntus esto, et officium tuum strenue facito. Cicer. l. 1. ad Attic. Ep. 20. Statius l. 5. Sylv. ???. v. 108.
Doctaque Cyrene, Sparteve animosa creavit.
Idem l. 1. Achilleid. v. 402.
Progeniem caeli, Spartaeve potentis alumnam.
Sparta Iunonem maxime coluit; Ovid. l. 3. Fastor. Hîc violae et myrti plurimae. Nic. Lloyd. Hodie Musithra, in Tzaconia provinc. sub Turcis, nullius pene nominis, 6. mill. pass. a Nauplia in Meridiem, versus Taenarium promontor. Vide Lacedaemon.
